Pregnancy myths busted
As soon as you announce you’re pregnant everyone will be clambering round to give you advice: from your mum, to your other half’s second cousin, to that chap you sat next to on the bus once.
Pregnancy myths busted As soon as you announce you're pregnant everyone will be clambering round to give you advice: from your mum, to your other half's second cousin, to that chap you sat next to on the bus once. But often advice surrounding pregnancy is based on myths and old wives tales. So we've taken the top five pregnancy myths and busted them, bringing you the truth surrounding the myths. Now when old Aunt Ethel tells you to start eating for two, you can put her straight!
Myth 1 - Pregnancy causes "baby brain"
The long-held belief being that pregnancy triggers memory lapses dubbed "baby-brain" syndrome was debunked by a report in the British Journal of Psychiatry. According to a study by the Australian National University in Canberra, neither pregnancy nor motherhood damaged brain power, so being forgetful can no longer be blamed on the baby.
Myth 2 - How you carry your bump can predict its gender
How a bump is carried is as much to do with the mother's body shape and muscle tone. With first babies, the muscles and ligaments tend to be tighter so babies are carried higher. But a bump's position is also determined by the baby's presentation (whether it is breech or transverse), and its gestational age and weight.
Myth 3 - Stretch marks are avoidable if you slather on creams
Sadly girls, we all wish this one were true, but it isn't! Diligently applying expensive creams and potions from day one of pregnancy just doesn't pay off! There's no proof that any of the creams and oils that claim to prevent stretch marks actually work. The most they can achieve is a reduction of itching caused by dry skin during pregnancy. Stretch marks develop because of changes in the elastic supportive tissue that lies just beneath the skin. No one really knows why about half of pregnant women get them, and the rest don't.
Myth 4 - You're eating for two
The old phrase ' eating for two' is a little misleading. Most women don't need any extra calories for the first six months of pregnancy and only about 200 extra calories a day for the last 3 months. This is equivalent to one large banana, two slices of buttered toast or a small jacket potato with a little grated cheese. It's fine to have the occasional treat but if you put on too much weight, problems can result such as backache and varicose veins. Also it can be hard to shift the weight later.
Myth 5 - Having sex might hurt the baby
A lot of couples feel uncomfortable being intimate after they've discovered they're going to be parents. They worry that they could hurt their unborn child. These worries though are unfounded: Seven layers of skin from the abdominal wall to the amniotic sac protect your baby. Your cervix has lengthened and hardened to prevent anything from getting into the uterus. Additionally, your cervix is producing mucus to keep the vagina clean and infection free. Intercourse cannot reach, touch or harm the baby. The only exception to this is a woman whose doctor has told her to abstain because of a complication.

Headche problem
What Can Cause Headaches During the Second Trimester of Pregnancy?
The second trimester of pregnancy tends to be the time when most pregnant women feel their best. Gone are the days of the first trimester and its morning sickness (hopefully!) And, during the second trimester of pregnancy, you are not as nearly uncomfortable and unwieldy as you tend to be during the third trimester of pregnancy. Still, there are some ailments that can afflict the woman during the second trimester of pregnancy. One of these problems tends to be headaches. By understanding what can cause headaches during the second trimester of pregnancy, you will be better equipped to avoid them and to deal with them when they do come.
One of the most common causes for headaches, both during the second trimester of pregnancy and any other time, is stress. The anxiety that accompanies pregnancy can weigh heavily on the brow of the pregnant woman. By the time she is in her second trimester, her body has already been through quite a bit, but there is still quite a bit to go. In addition, the normal cares of everyday life can add to this stress. If your headaches during the second trimester of pregnancy are stress-related, the best remedy for your headache is to engage in some stress-reduction techniques. Relaxation is helpful, but more often exercise can be a great way to relieve stress. Moderate exercise is also good for both you and your baby during the second trimester of pregnancy. Hunger can also cause headaches, as can dehydration. It is important for the pregnant woman to get enough to eat and drink throughout the day. While a pregnant woman is not really eating for two, she does need more calories than she did before she was pregnant. In fact, a pregnant woman needs to have about 300 extra calories per day during pregnancy. In terms of dehydration, it is very important to get enough water. Dehydration is not only dangerous for both you and your baby, but it can cause nausea, or increase the nausea that you already have.
One of the causes of headaches during the second trimester of pregnancy that most people don't think of right away has to do with the pregnant woman's increased sense of smell. Noxious fumes can cause headaches during the second trimester of pregnancy in particular because many women are more sensitive to smells during pregnancy.
If you have severe or prolonged headaches during the second trimester of pregnancy, you should consult with your health care provider. The headaches may be caused by, or be a symtom of a more serious problem.

Leg Cramps @'tarik mengkarung'
Thanks to my dear friend who is medical doctor at Malaysia(Dr Fauziah a.k.a sis pau) and pursuing her phd study here for this link.....
Leg cramps are a sudden tightening of muscles, which can cause intense pain. It is not uncommon to experience leg cramps during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester. According to Danforth's Obstetrics and Gynecology, almost half of all pregnant women suffer from muscle spasms in their calves, with cramping more frequent during the evening.
No one really knows why women have increased leg cramps during pregnancy. Speculation is that your leg muscles are tired and stressed from carrying extra weight. As you gain more weight, your leg cramps may increase. It could also be caused by pressure from the growing baby and expanding uterus being placed on the nerves and blood vessels that go to your legs. There is some speculation that too little calcium can cause leg cramps. There are no good studies that support these theories at this time. However, it is a good idea to increase your calcium intake during your pregnancy. This nutrient is important to your baby's development and helps keep your own bones strong and healthy.
There are a few things that you can do to treat leg cramps or prevent them from occurring. Try one or more of the following interventions to help relieve or prevent your leg cramps.
To try and prevent leg cramps you can take these precautions:
* Avoid standing or sitting with your legs crossed for long periods of time since it can restrict your blood flow.
* Take a warm bath before bedtime may help to relax your muscles.
* Stretch your calf and leg muscles a few times a day, especially before bedtime. (Avoid pointing your toes)
* Rotate your ankles and wiggle your toes when you are sitting to increase circulation.
* If your doctor allows it, try to take a walk every day.
* Lie on your left side to improve your circulation.
* Elevate your legs when possible.
* Wear supportive stockings.
* Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
* Magnesium has been proven to be beneficial in the treatment of leg cramps. If your doctor allows it, take a supplement in addition to your prenatal vitamin.
Here are some tips to relieve leg cramps:
If, despite all your precautions, you do get a leg cramp you should immediately straighten your leg, heel first, and gently flex your toes back toward your shins. If someone is with you, have them massage the muscle that is cramping. This may hurt at first, but it will ease the spasm and the pain will gradually go away. Warming the muscle with a warm towel or hot water bottle or heating pad may help relax the cramp. You can also try walking around, or standing on a cold surface. Some women have found that Tylenol or Acetaminophen is helpful in relieving the pain.
Leg cramps usually go away on their own without any medical treatment. But if your muscle pain is constant and not just an occasional cramp - or if you notice any redness, warmth, swelling or tenderness in your leg you should call your health care provider.

No more spicy food for mama.......
Pregnancy Heartburn is Common
Many women complain of heartburn during pregnancy. Heartburn during pregnancy is in fact one of the most common side effects of pregnancy. You may experience heartburn as a burning sensation in your throat or chest. Other women experience heartburn as a large lump like feeling in their throat or upper chest. Either way, heartburn is uncomfortable and best avoided or prevented if possible during pregnancy. Fortunately there are a number of simple steps you can take to minimize your heartburn woes during pregnancy.
Causes of Heartburn During Pregnancy
Many different causes result in heartburn during pregnancy. One of the primary reasons women develop heartburn during pregnancy is hormonal variations. Hormones, particularly progesterone, can relax the valve that normally prevents stomach acid from backing up into the esophagus. This can result in irritation and heartburn.
The simplest way to do this is to break your three large meals down into six smaller ones. That way you'll be eating during pregnancy roughly every 3 hours. This will help curb hunger pangs. What you don't want to do is eat a full size meal six times every day, as you will be getting much more than the recommended 300 extra calories every day. Think about 1/2 the size of your ordinary meal. Most women will get roughly 400 calories at each sitting, though this will vary from woman to woman depending on your individual body composition, activity level and caloric needs.
Indigestion and heartburn also are common during the third trimester. This typically results when the growing size of your uterus places increasing pressure on your intestines and stomach. This can promote stomach acids passing into the esophagus and therefore heartburn.
Treating Heartburn During Pregnancy
While you can't adjust your hormone levels or stop your uterus from growing while pregnant, there are some simple measures you can take to help reduce heartburn and in some cases prevent it altogether. Here are some tips for minimizing the discomforts of heartburn during pregnancy:
* Eat several small meals during the day instead of three large ones. This will help reduce the pressure on your stomach and help ease the digestion process.
* Avoid foods that are spicy or overly fatty, as this can contribute to heartburn in pregnancy.
* Always eat at least one hour before laying down at night. Laying down shortly after eating will contribute to heartburn. Some women find they feel best if they allow at least two hours between eating and laying down, whether for a nap or for bedtime.
* Eat plenty of yogurt or try some milk if you experience frequent heartburn. These foods can help reduce heartburn symptoms.
* Avoid drinking lots of fluids during meals, which can distend your stomach and contribute to heartburn.
* Try chewing some gum after meals, which may help neutralize stomach acids and reduce heartburn.
* Avoid caffeine and carbonated beverages that can also contribute to heartburn.
* Avoid wearing clothes that are too tight or that pinch at the waist. This can also contribute to heartburn.
* Avoid spices and hot sauces as well as certain condiments including ketchup or mustard.
* Avoid tomato and tomato based products including marinara sauce, which for some may contribute to heartburn.
* Try mixing some honey with your milk, which can also ease the burn and discomfort of heartburn.
* Try over the counter antacids such as Tums to relieve severe heartburn. Check in with your healthcare provider first. Most antacids are considered relatively safe to use during pregnancy, but you should always check the label and ask your healthcare provider if you have any questions.
If none of these measures helps relieve your heartburn, check in with your doctor. They may be able to prescribe something stronger to relieve your discomfort. Some women who have heartburn problems before pregnancy might find their symptoms particularly difficult during pregnancy and may require more aggressive treatment.
Of course the most important thing to remember is as with all pregnancy side effects, this too will pass. In fact you should realize an abrupt improvement in your symptoms soon after delivery.

Cerita mama..........(episod 2)
Sambungan....
